Hydrazine and hydrazine release compounds are used in boiler water as oxygen scavengers to prevent corrosion of internal metal surfaces.
Kittiwake comparator test kits for Hydrazine measure dose concentrations in boiler water feedlines. The highly accurate and user friendly Smart 2 Photometer provides measurements to ppb levels.
It is important to maintain only a small excess of hydrazine, as any increased residual is decomposed, or vaporised.
Used extensively in the marine industry at sub ppm levels, hydrazine reacts with residual boiler water oxygen to produce ammonia. Ammonia itself will react with carbon dioxide and being volative, will give some protection to condensate return lines. Hydrazine and it's reaction products do not increase boiler solids - an important aspect when treating high pressure systems. Non-protective iron oxide reacts with hydrazine to produce protective magnetite, which in turn serves as an oxygen absorber.
