Viscosity

Viscosity is the most important property of the oil. A bearing journal or piston ring will slide many thousands of kilometers in its working life and is prevented from wear because of a very thin film of oil. Oil of the correct viscosity will provide optimum film strength in bearing clearance with minimum friction losses and leakage.

Engine oils generally conform to SAE viscosity grades. Low temperature measurements are taken for multigrade oils and the SAE number is quoted as a double grade, i.e. 15W/40, where the first number relates to the viscosity in centiPoises (cP) at a reduced temperature. High temperature measurements are also required.

Generally, hydraulic oil , turbine oil and gear oils conform to ISO viscosity designations. Viscosity must always be referred to as a standard temperature, usually 40°C or 100°C. See also Viscosity Conversion Tables .

Kittiwake provides a range of products to test Viscosity in different applications:

Heated Viscometer FG-K1-200-KW

This highly accurate, electronic viscometer is available as a stand-alone kit which measures both heated and unheated viscosity.

Unheated Viscometer

This sophisticated electronic viscometer comes as part of the Kittiwake Oil Test Centre .

Viscotube FG-K14828-KW

The easy to use Viscotube uses a falling ball technique to give you fast, accurate viscosity results.

ECON Viscosity Test FG-K3-020-KW

This fully portable Viscosity Test gives you a simple go/no go reading.
