Ammonia

Ammonia detection in water treatment systems is particularly important for aquarium owners and fish farm operators. Ammonia is highly soluble in water and extremely toxic to fish. Fish farm owners must monitor and maintain careful control of ammonia levels to ensure optimum water conditions for their stock.

Ammonia occurs naturally in water treatment systems as a by-product of decayed organic matter and from the breakdown of nitrogen based fertiliser contamination of pools and ponds.

Nitrate reducing bacteria also produce "corrosive" ammonia in dormant sections of closed water treatment systems. If unchecked, this can lead to localised corrosion of pipework and associated equipment.

Kittiwake colour card tests provide indicative results for ammonia, while comparator tests and photometer tests give increased accuracy for the professional or enthusiast.

The table below gives a chart of recommended tests.
