Denitrifying bacteria are naturally occuring organisms that consume nitrates, converting them through nitrite to ammonia.
Left unchecked, denitrifying bacteria will proliferate in aquariums, concentrating in gravels, filters, pumps and in the biomass. They cause problems for the aquarist as low toxicity nitrates present in the water are converted by denitrifying bacteria into toxic nitrite and ammonia.
Closed cooling systems treated with sodium nitrite as a corrosion inhibitor can also experience localised corrosion as the bacteria break down the nitrates and nitrites to corrosive ammonia.
Kittiwake denitrifying bacteria detection tubes provide a simple means of culturing the bacteria contained in a water sample, enabling visible quantification prior to treatment.
