Testing for nitrates in water

Nitrate is a stable oxidised form of nitrogen and as such is present in most natural waters. However, contamination by nitrates in water can occur from fertilisers, biodegredation of organic matter and oxidation of nitrogen containing compounds in industrial wastes or sewage .


Excessive levels in drinking water can lead to methaemoglobinaemia in bottle-fed infants and there are EC directives on maximum nitrate levels in potable water supplies.

Nitrates in water can be measured using Kittiwake test strips , comparator and photometer methods .

The table below gives a chart of recommended tests.
