Wastewater Testing

Organic contamination of our rivers and lakes can have a devastating effect on the overall ecology and natural life balances of our environment. It is therefore essential that any wastewater outflow from industry is suitably treated so that it will not affect such delicate systems.


Chemical Oxygen Demand (C.O.D.) Testing

The determination of the Chemical Oxygen Demand (C.O.D.) of wastewater gives an indication of the overall level of organic contamination. This contamination is measured by quantifying the equivalent amount of oxygen required to oxidise organic matter in the sample.

Biological Oxygen Demand (B.O.D.)

B.O.D. is a test used to assess the level of biodegradable organic matter present in water. It can be used to infer general water quality or degree of polution. The B.O.D. test measures the rate of oxygen uptake by microorganisms in the sample by recording the increase in pressure inside the B.O.D. bottle over time. Typically run for 5 days at 20oC an additional stirrer set and thermostatic cabinet are rerquired for constant operating conditions.

FG-K27437-KW: C.O.D. Starter Pack

Contains all hardware required to carry out C.O.D. analysis including the Smart 2 Photometer, ECO8 Digestion Unit and protective screen. Simply order the C.O.D. vials and sampling syringes as required.



FG-K27438-KW: B.O.D. Starter Pack

The B.O.D. Starter pack contains all equipment necessary for basic B.O.D. testing including x 6 sensor heads and B.O.D. bottles, seeding tablets, and magnetic stirrers.

AS-K27442: Thermostatic Cabinet

Thermostatic cabinet with sufficient space to hold the complete B.O.D. stirrer assembly, plus bottles and sensors (must be purchased seperately).


Further Test Equipment for Wastewater Testing

Smart 2 Photometer

A multi-parameter, direct reading Photometer that is calibrated with all three C.O.D. ranges plus additional test parameters from our standard range. The Photometer comes supplied with C.O.D. adapter, instruction booklet and a mains charger.

ECO8 Digestion Unit

A compact mains powered (120/240V) unit that can hold up to eight C.O.D. vials. Built in timer and standard pre-set digestion temperatures simplify operation. Mains On/Off indicator and LED indicators provide continuous visual indication of chosen parameters. A clear protective screen is also available for complete safety.

C.O.D. Test Vials

Our C.O.D. test uses pre-filled vials that are supplied with pre-measured quantities of sulphuric acid-dichromate reagent. Vials also contain mercuric sulphate to remove chloride interference, as detailed in USEPA-approved method. Three ranges are available, depending upon the anticipated levels of contamination expected. The test requires an ECO8 Digestion Unit to heat the tubes at 148oC for two hours and a pre- alibrated Photometer to complete the test.

Turbidity Testing

The Kittiwake Turbidity Tube provides a fast, simple test for the estimation of wastewater turbidity and suspended solid content. Trend wastewater quality using this inexpensive tube test. An excellent way to detect clarity issues early.
