Military equipment is expected to operate in harsh and hostile environments, often despite having been laid up in storage for months or even years. Most armed forces operate maintenance programs (HUMS – Health and Usage Monitoring Systems) on their vehicles, engines, compressors, generators and other critical rotating equipment, which often include routine lubricant changes even though the lube oil may remain perfectly servicable.
